Healing Modalities

Body

Category of treatment methods primarily utilizing direct, indirect or subtle contact of the healer with the client’s physical body. Traditional approaches of body therapies are massage and other forms of human touch and manipulation. These can be augmented by a variety of techniques like crystal therapy, products such as vitamins as well as special diets and nutritional programs. Many body therapies can be best described as mind-body treatments since they impact both the physical and mental well being of the patient. The foundational principle which informs body therapy is that the human body has innate and instinctual resources that can bring about its successful healing.

Energy

Refers to alternative and complementary treatment methods based on the use, modification or manipulation of energy fields. Energy therapies focus attention on the energy fields that are believed to surround and penetrate the human body. Energy therapies seek to heal mental or physical disorders by rebalancing the energy fields in the human body or by drawing on spiritual energies or forces for such healing work. Most energy therapies assume that matter and energy are not exclusive opposites, but view matter instead as a denser form of energy that is more easily perceived by the senses. Many energy therapies are rooted in systems of traditional Indian or Chinese medicines; other energy therapies draw upon contemporary scientific theories. Energy therapies can generally be divided for purposes of discussion into two groups: those that utilize energy fields located in, affecting or emanating from the human body (Biofield Therapies) and those that use electromagnetic fields in unconventional ways. Energy therapies can use movement, manipulation of the energy field or body while others focus on transforming the electromagnetic fields surrounding it. A number of therapies utilize devices to generate magnetic fields or low-frequency sound. Individuals may or may not need to be physically present to receive the therapy depending on the specific form used.

Meditation

Meditation takes a variety of forms as a technique of spiritual practice and stress relief and can also be used as a mind/body therapy. In general, meditation takes two forms—contemplation and concentration. Each form of meditation has its unique philosophy as well as its respective set of rituals and practices. During most sessions, a meditator concentrates on a single object—it can be a candle, flower, mantra, breath or word—and does so while standing, sitting, lying, or remaining in a yoga posture. In contemplation, the practitioner is strictly focused on a divinity or deity and sometimes accompanies the activity with prayer. In recent years, meditation has become a standard and accepted practice in both the mind-body and allopathic medical fields. Health practitioners routinely prescribe meditation to their patients as a way to lower blood pressure, improve performance, help with addiction, relieve insomnia, decrease the impact of stress on the body, and to reduce chronic pain and symptoms of chronic illness. Above all, meditation is a discipline, which when practiced regularly, will result in a positive simultaneous impact on physical, emotional, and mental states.

Mind

A large grouping that includes diverse therapies most frequently intended for patients with emotional, behavioral, mental, relational or psychological issues. All involve personal contact between therapist and patient in which verbal communication is the primary agent for insight, understanding and transformation. Such therapies are sometimes referred to as “talk” therapy, counseling, or psychotherapy. Each follows a unique theoretical foundation and uses a range of techniques to achieve varied goals such as individuation, actualization, a relativized ego or increased resilience. Mental Therapies offer psychological treatment rather than medical treatment. When deemed necessary, a mental therapy practitioner may refer an individual to a medical professional. Such therapies often focus on an individual’s past, present conditions of life or concerns about the future. Cognitive distortions, unconscious motivations or psychological causes for present situations might be explored. In addition, these therapies can be offer value for patients with spiritual as well as physical issues. Some mental therapies include an experiential, energetic and/or a spiritual component. They may also be used in conjunction with a variety of other therapies such as body, energetic, experiential, meditation, movement or spirit. It is usually advisable not to undergo more than one mental therapy at time and is critical that individuals discuss their interest in combining other kinds of therapies with their mental health practitioner.

Movement

Refers to methods of healing based on the systematic or intuitive movement of the body. In movement therapy, individuals perform various physical actions using the body to bring about balance between the mind, body and spirit. Movement therapies are composed of a variety of physical movements, breathing exercises, directed focus of attention and meditation practices. For centuries, techniques such as Yoga and T’ai Chi have been practiced in Eastern cultures to enhance physical, psychological and spiritual health and have been adapted as movement therapies by many Western practitioners. Some movement therapies use dance or free-movement as the basis of the therapeutic process. They are also considered experiential since movement therapies are self-originated actions in which the practitioner is an agent and not a passive recipient of therapy. Movement therapies are related to body therapies because they also use the body as the agent of change. Many movement therapies have a meditative, spiritual and mental component to them.

Spirit

Therapies representing a wide range of healing methods and belief systems that are based on integrating and connecting the innate healing energies within all human beings with external, universal healing energy. Spiritual therapies have many labels including faith, energetic, vibrational and clairvoyant healing. Fundamental to all is that they do not use medicines or remedies. However, all forms of spiritual therapy are non-invasive and do not interfere with other treatments or medications. As a result, they are safe for use in conjunction with other therapies and they have the potential to heal emotional, mental, spiritual and physical disturbances. Depending upon the method, an individual receiving therapy may be either passive or active. In some cases, sessions can be conducted from a distance. Spiritual therapies may also augment many body, mind, experiential or energy therapies as an important part of the client’s belief system.
